Today was just a long lazy day. Carey and the boys spent a lot of time sledding again. Kitty really wanted to go too. So bad in fact that she went running out after them wearing nothing but her sisters snow boots and was very dissapointed that she got pulled back in the house. LOL

We have so much snow out there that they built a small snow fort. Carey built up the walls and then used the kids saucers to form the roof before piling the snow on top of them. It wasn't very big. There was enough room for one to be comfortable or two to squeeze in tight. I got some good pictures of it. Poor little Charles got mashed underneath it when the roof collapsed (helped along by their wonderful father) and wasn't very happy about it since he got quite a bit of snow down his suit. After Carey cleared away the saucers he helped the boys build back up the walls although he wouldn't put a roof back on it. Since so many children play outside unsupervised here, Carey thought it would be irresponsible of him to leave something up that could collapse on someone and possible hurt them.

The kids decided that they wanted to be Indian Chiefs today and so they painted their faces with some of their markers. They looked hilarious and they were quite proud of themselves.

We have introduced the kids to musicals and they've fallen in love. This week they've watched The Music Man and Guys & Dolls. They really didn't pay that much attention to Guys & Dolls but I think that's probably because they were too busy running around singing music from The Music Man. Two of their favorite songs were Shipoopi as sung by Buddy Hackett and Gary Indiana.

Luck of all luck, a spider has chosen to make his abode with us this winter, specifically a P. phalangioides (otherwide known as daddy longlegs). It's been spotten several times in the bathroom over the last few days and today the kidlets noticed it for the first time and have "adopted" it as a pet. They've always been taught that spiders are lucky and are good to have around. Especially since they take care of the icky bugs that we definitely don't want around so they were happy to welcome it. It was funny watching them boil down the stairs with excitement screeching about the spider taking a bath. :D

I can't believe this year has gone by so fast. So much has happened that it's hard to put it all in context. Kitty is walking & talking, Deedee can count to two and draw circles, Charles learned how to pedal his bike, and James is talking much better. We moved, Carey is now oficially a Junior and me.... well I just walked me ass off everywhere all summer and don't even have the smaller pant size to proove it. :( LOL I didn't lose one darn pound this summer. I know, I know, I traded fat for muscle but it would have been nice to change at least a little bit. :D

We don't have tv so there was no way to watch the ball drop in New York. However, Carey got the bright idea of seeing if there was a live feed on the computer and he actually found one. So, at 9 on the dot we all watched it drop. The kids really liked it and wanted to watch it again. They were dissapointed when we explained that they would have to wait until next year. Or, I guess I should say at the end of this one. :D

Today was very simple, which is what I've been yearning for and had been wanting for this Holiday Season. While, in the end, the kids got way more then they were supposed, it was still very close to my vision. I dearly love my family and enjoy the time we have together, but at times it can be very stressful. So this year, although I hadn't planned it that way on purpose, in the end I was happy to have actual Christmas day just to ourselves. We've never had a holiday like that to just us and I enjoyed it.

We were all slugabed's although the kids finally got insistent about coming downstairs just before 10. They were all really excited to come and see what they'd been left. They all got their stockings first. At the last minute while they weren't looking, I also stuff little ornaments that their Great Aunt Elaine was kind enough to make and send. Apparently she must have forgotten to send ours last year because we got two years worth in our box this year. LOL The kids were all excited over their goodies in their stockings and all immediately started eating their fruit which I was happy to see. A pear, a handful of nuts and a tangerine would fill their little bellies and hold them a few hours until it was time to eat lunch, a simple fare of crackers, cheese, and meat. It was also much healthier fare than the candy making it's way down their gullets as well. We decided to show patience by only one gift getting opened at a time. I didn't want a huge mad dash for presents and then not even know what anyone had gotten. (Or even what they themselves had gotten.)

They only got a few items each, most of which all fit into a large gift bag that I'd made, one for each of them. The all got poetry books, as well as a book with jigsaw puzzles. James Where the Sidewalk Ends, Charles The Dragons Are Singing Tonight and Deedee a beautiful fairy poetry book with gorgeous artwork and little sliding pictures. And Carey was pleased to note the he got two shirts he'd been wanting: I Demand Justice black T from DespairWear and I Am A Sexy Shoeless God of War! featuring Belkar from Order of the Stick.

After the presents were opened and everything had been put away, the morning was spent quietly playing. James insisted that we get out his new marble run he got from Grandma Sue. It's a bit flimsy but he loves it anyway and he had a blast putting the darn thing together.

We had a good lunch, (I had a nap) and then Carey was off to return some stuff to his mother while I got the kids ready to go. The road was beautiful and clear so we decided we'd drive thirty miles to see the locomotive park in Lewiston. At this time every year, it's always lit with a ton of lights and it's really an awesome sight. The kids had a blast there and Carey's talking about doing it again next year.

We got out on a bit of a late start, so it was later than planned when we got back but we still did our big meal that Carey asked for: hamburgers! LOL He said he wanted something simple and he decided that hamburgers would definitely be simple and fun. After everyone scarfed all of that down with sparkling cider or eggnog, we shared a small plum pudding that I had gotten. I thought it was very good although most everyone else just picked at theirs and ate only the cream from the top. Sigh... they don't know what's good!

The kids got shooed to bed. While Carey took care of the younger ones, I stayed downstairs with James and read one of his new books to him, a really cool pirate book that also came with four jigsaw puzzles. We read the whole book (not very big) and did one of the puzzles. He should have gone to bed with the rest, but he'd been so good just jumping in and clearing the table without my even asking that I just had to reward him. So he's finally off to bed, and even Kitty is asleep! Finally, and Carey and I could sit down to play a game that we'd gotten a couple of weeks ago. It looked like a lot of fun and we'd been looking forward to playing it.

However, Carey threw a wrench into the works and insisted that we go sledding first! So here it is 10 at night, and we're out there with our children's pilfered saucers giggling like naughty children. It was a blast. We only went down a few times and we had the monitor with us in case the kids woke up, but we didn't want to be away for too long. Carey was growling that I went faster and further than he was. I only wiped out once and I'm still not sure what happened. Still, I haven't had that much fun in a long time. It was exhilerating.

We finally went back in and changed out of our wet stuff into nice comfy new pj's to play the game. We thought we had figured it out at least although, Carey was complaining because we were rotating through the adventure decks rather quickly. He had already bought some expansion cards but he'd been assured that he wouldn't actually need them for some time. We finally realized that Carey had forgotten to open of the decks! After that we had a ton, more then enough to last us for quite a while. James is also super interested in it, so I need to figure out how to dumb down a game meant for 12 and up so a 5 year old can understand it and still have a lot of fun. The game is called Runebound, and while it cost an arm and a leg, we're having fun with it. It's nice for once to be able to play a game with Carey that doesn't have to have more than two players to be a lot of fun.

Today was busy. This afternoon we went shopping. We had to return the outfit the kids had received for Christmas and I wanted to find a few items. I was shocked when I returned just four items to Macy's and received back over $40! Almost half of that went to buy Charles a much needed heavy sweater that he enjoyed picking out all by himself. We also popped into Old Navy real quick to return a few items and we chose a nice sweater for Kitty that in the end fit Deedee much better. It was the length of the sleeves. They were just way too long on the little thing.

We got home just in time to have the kids take a quick siesta while I got dressed and then they got dressed to go and have Christmas Eve dinner with Carey parents. The girls were adorable in red velvet dresses and even the boys were dressed well. Carey grumbled that he felt out of place because he was in torn jeans but he did make sure and shave, for which I was grateful. I wore a black knee length skirt with large red flowers, a black shirt with a black bead medallion at the neck (very pretty, one of my favorites) and calf lenght black books. I even managed to put my hair up and wear nice jewelry. And I wore the long black velvet dress coat the I received this year after Carey's grandmother Doris passed on.

Dinner was wonderful. Sue always get a smoke cured roast from a local man. The last few times I had it, it was way too rich and I'm not a huge fan of the smoke flavor anyway. However, this year it was excellent. However dinner was running late because she forgot to take the oven off of timed bake when she took the potatos out, so the oven turned itself off. Thank goodness the thing only needed to be heated up because she was reduced to slicing chunks off and heating them in the microwave. The kids all ate well although they finished much sooner than we did. They all played quietly together while we finished eating. They got fudgsicles for desert however, since we were running late, the adults didn't have time to have their dessert as we needed to get presents done before Sue had to leave for Mass.

We all got way too much but James got really excited over a marble run. The guys all liked the tie-dye undies they got (Deedee was dissapointed that she didn't get any) and I really liked the cool footie pj's that the kids got. The toes can be flipped up (like the mits on babie's sleepers) so there is an option to have the feet bare or covered. I got several nice shirts but my favorite was a jean jacket that Sue had embroidered a Celtic dragon on the back and one sleeve. I can't wait to wear it. The kids all insisted about putting on their new jammies (big help to us so we didn't say no). The only sour note was Deedee. Towards the end of presents, she took offense at the packaging of one and refused it. So her grandmother told her fine, she couldn't have it and put it away. So we had a few minutes of screeching and then Deedee started loudly demanding more presents. Sigh... this is exactly what I'd been hoping to keep from happening but the simple Christmas with few gifts had long since gone out the door when five big garbage bags showed up full of stuff not asked for and not wanted for the kids. But it was getting late so we loaded everything up to go home and then I decided on the spur of the moment to go with Sue to Mass instead.

I've always wanted to attend the one for Christmas Eve and I'm glad that I did. We got there a bit late. Sue kicked me out while she went to look for parking. I guess she was concerned that my boots wouldn't make for quick walking on icey pavement. While I was waiting, Father Joe arrived (and was kind enough to enquire about me since I was standing outside still) but Sue got there right after. I didn't think we'd find any seats but we wound up in the third pew back. It was very beautiful. The manger was quite large and elaborate but not over done. There were poinsettia's everywhere, especially right in front of the altar. The music was wonderful to listen to. There was quite a nice choir. I did receive the blessing, but I did not take Communion. I thought it interesting to see a service not much different than what I had attending only a couple of days before.

James didn't forget to put out cookies for Father Christmas and he was pleased as punch to use his gingerbread mug that he bought last month. Of course, by the time I got home Carey had already disposed of the milk and cookies although he'd been thoughtful enough to leave a few crumbs on the plate (that Kitty promptly ate) and a bit of milk in the mug.

I also got home just in time to find out that Carey's system was acting up again and for him to go straight to bed. He was having diahrrea and his guts were cramping. He said he was feeling like that before dinner although it didn't get bad until he got home. Sigh... it could be anything. Rich meat, too much junk in the form of cookies and soda, etc. He's been prone to these problems for several years now ever since he got some kidney stones not long after we met. There has been talk of IBS by the doctors although no tests have been done yet. Since then, Carey has really cut out on most of the sweets, 99% of his pop consumptions and most of the processed foods although he refuses to give up pop tarts. I must admit that I've seen a huge differance in him so even if it's not IBS, his system likes to new eating habits.

So, instead of him helping me get the last of the stuff set up for Christmas day, he went to bed and I got to spend the next three hours fighting with the tree house. Carey's grandparents had been very generous in their Christmas money for the kidlets and the three older ones decided to pool their money and buy this for themselves. I had promised to put it together for them for Christmas Day, but boy, what a pain. At first it went together all right, but I realized that I'd put a peg in wrong so when I redid it, nothing worked and I still can't figure out why. For some reason, one of the layers won't line up right. Sigh... there are two different models. We could have spent $10 less and gotten one preassembled (and that would take up a ton of space) or get one that we had to put together but could also disassemble for storage. Well, most of it got put together and I must admit that the kids were really excited to see it the next morning and spent some time playing with it. None of them realized it was incomplete (or cared that we hadn't gotten any furniture for it yet).

I also prepared their stockings. Each got a handful of nuts, a pear, a tangerine, a candycane, a small wooden top, and a hand knit finger puppet (not by me alas). Deedee also received a huge wooden pencil a foot long and big around as a penny.

Sunday was very peaceful. We went to Church and listened to some beautiful music, including one sung by our choir mistress. I wish I knew what it was called and I'll have to ask her. James did very well in his RE class. He happily waved goodbye to me when I left and he was excited to show me the small manger that he'd made with corks, old fashioned clothes pins, but of straw and foam. It's really cute and I'll try to get a pic posted soon.

Afterwards, we stopped at Hodgins Drugstore on the way home so Charles could spend the birthday money that's been burning a hole in his pocket for a month! While I thought he picked out a bunch of useless junk (I had been hoping to teach him qaulity above qauntity but Carey in the end is the one that led him around the store as he chose his items). Among many things, he brought home a lifelike rubber snake, a plastice eyeball (would have been perfect for his wizard bench at his birthday party), a lightup bouncy ball and some candy. As we were leaving, Kitty latched onto a furry stuffed monkey as large as she is and refused to let go of it! She set up a huge ruckus when Carey tried to take it from her and wrapped her skinny little arms even tighter around it! So he hauled it up front and used a portion of the generous amount of Christmas money that her paternal great grandparents sent her. She happily went home with it and immediately snuggled right down with it for a nap.

She woke up just in time for a visit from Aunty Sarah and Uncle Jeffrey. They came bearing gifts for the little ones. Deedee was excited with a little pirate ad lib book. Each page has a paragraph and then one or two slots to add stuff in. Each paragraph comes with several little paper items to choose from and slide into the slot. James got a cool game called Zingo (any guesses as to what game it's similar to?) that makes you say the name of the item to get the tile for your card, so it will help him with his speech, and Charles got an awesome prehistoric animal pop up book. They also all got little ornaments. James was excited to give the little jade earrings he'd picked out for her to his aunt. She was happy to put them in since they matched her sweater and she'd neglected to wear any today. They weren't able to stay long though since they had a long drive ahead of them for home and Jeffrey had to work the next day.

Happy Solstice! Well, for yesterday anyway. I know, I know, I'm a day late. LOL But I'm very busy. Today, not only did my family coming down for our holiday meal, but my pagan group also did a solstice ritual tonight! The Divine Child of Light was born in the long dark hours of the night and the Oak King has triumphed over the Holly King! Our sun is finally on the way back. I found a beautiful albeit sad poem that I thought personified the Solstice very well.

The Buck in the Snow

White sky, over the hemlocks bowed with snow
Saw you not at the beginning of the evening the antlered buck
and his doe
Standing in the apple-orchard? I saw them. I saw them
suddenly go,
Tails up, with long leaps lovely and slow,
Over the stone-wall into the wood of hemlocks bowed with snow.

Now lies he here, his wild blood scalding the snow.

How strange a thing is death, bringing to his knees, bringing
to his antlers
The buck in the snow.
How strange a thing, --- a mile away by now, it may be,
Under the heavy hemlocks that as the moments pass
Shift their loads a little, letting fall a feather of snow ---
Life, looking out attentive from the eyes of the doe.

Edna St. Vincent Millay ~ Winter Poems selected by Barbara Rogasky

Our ritual was very simple. The door to the Sanctuary is curtained off (the doors are glass and wood). As you enter, there is an altar with blessed salt and water to purify, center and ground oneself before you begin your journey into the dark. The chairs are set up in a spiral with the young God & Goddess, the High Priestess and those calling the quarters in the center with the altar. You begin be going through being drummed in by musicians and then you slowly walk to the center or until you find an open chair although for me it was the center since I was calling the East. Today was so busy for me because not only did I have dinner to prepare, a family to welcome and enjoy a visit with, the actual ritual itself but also the altar to set up. I prepared a very simple one.

There were actually two altars. One at the entrance set of up for cleansing and centering as one entered the sacred space. It held a small bowl of blessed salt, a gorgeous copper bowl of blessed water, a crystal star, evergreens and a candle. A greeter stood beside it to welcome you and dry your hands as you entered. The official altar is what I set up in the center. First was placed a white cloth (not seen in the photo), the dark green cloth with a discreet gold plaid & holly design, and then the white lace altar cloth. I use that on all of my altars and it's very special to me. Placed upon it were evergreens gathered by one of our group members, a white candle placed in a beautiful crystal flower shaped holder, a small glass figure, one of my chalices, and various other bits of flora. To me the glass figure represented the Mother and welcomed back the beginning of spring. It seemed to be a figure with an arm curling around and cradling a babe. The sparkle within heralded the forthcoming life of spring. At the end was a small copper dish of flowers with evergreens, mistletoe, a pine cone, and a small silver angel placed around it. There were two roses representing the God & Goddess. The green of the cloth and evergreens is the coming growing season, the red of the flowers to me is the blood from the birth of the Child and white is innocence and purity. Then again, on the flip side the white mistletoe berries always represented the God's sacred seed and holly represents the Goddess' sacred blood so it's all about fertility. There was also a potato placed by the High Priestess to represent the going into the dark, the waiting for just the right moment and then reemerging as something new. I wore a beautiful ankle length dark green wool dress and a simple gold stylized stag pin with enamel ribbons of red and gold around it's throat. It's the first time I ever wore it (I also managed to slop sauce from the cake I brough down the front of it but not noticed until after the ritual) and I thought I'd feel out of place since I wasn't sure what the other participants would be wearing. I needn't have worried. North was wearing a beautiful purple Renaissance dress that she was married in, South in a long black dress of the same style as mine and West in a long red skirt and a white blouse. The High Priestess was also beautiful in one of Holy Clothing's gorgeous dresses. The ritual itself wasn't very long. The corners were called, poems read, a few songs sung, cakes & ale, etc. At one point all lights, even the ones from the gigantic tree in the corner, were extinguished except for the lone spark on the altar. A song was sung by the High Priestess' daughter, a few passages were read and then the Young Goddess lit the first candle. From there candles were quickly lit, with the light spiraling out around the circle. That moment is always very beautiful and profound for me. After cakes and ale, and the releasing of the corners, hands were joined and then a seemingly complex circle was danced out of the spiral (taking everyone passed the altar) to the tune of Deck the Halls. Everyone enjoyed fellowship downstairs with cookies, cake, wine, etc. Although there were few children in attendance, my small nephew Jordan was one of them. Everyone enjoyed his antics as he ran around and her garnered several laughs as he would sneak a quick paw over the edge of the table and steal a cookie. The butter cake with the spiced apricot butter sauce I took disappeared very quickly so I think it's definitely a keeper and perhaps the start of a tradition.

Speaking of traditions, I'm wondering if I started another one as well. I thought it very nice that my family came down for a family meal on the Solstice and I'm thinking of doing that again next year. I'm very proud of myself. The meal came out very well, we had way too much food, and everything was pretty close to being on time. I wanted to eat by 4 and we were eating 10 minutes after. We had an awesome ham that had been prepared with honey and a wonderful Belgium fruit ale (the only beer that I actually like!), an apple & pear compote (that no one ate and made it's way to a neighbor), my mother's scalloped potato's, pureed vegge (apples, pears, celery knob, and sweet potato's), some of my FIL's wonderful wine , and sparkling cider. For dessert we had pumpkin pie, apple pie, fudge, sugar cookies the kids helped with, and my stollen.

I was gone preparing the altar when my oldest brother and his small family showed up (on time, I was impressed) and when I got back the kids were all quietly playing upstairs while my brother had commandeered our new lap top and his fiance fed their little one. My mother was late but no later then I expected. She arrived with my youngest brother Jason and the news that my father would not be in attendance because he was on his way to Wisconsin to see an ill family member. I was also dissapointed that my grandmother would be unable to attend. It is very probably that this would be her last Christmas and I wanted her to see the family together at least this once. However, she was in too much pain to travel. I also had hopes the the energy in the spiral of the ritual would be beneficial for her. My sister and her son were really late. We had all finished dinner (The adults at the big table with the kidlets at our large coffee table. The large table was resplendant with a borrowed plaid table cloth from my MIL and upon it was a small flower arrangement in a glass swan (ultimately to be dismantled for the altar), my holiday wine glasses never used before and the brand new fancy plates that Carey had insisted on buying. Even the coffee table looked nice with a holiday tablecloth and santa straws for the little buggers.) and were almost done opening presents when my sister Mary and her small son arrived.

We had received way too much from the local Christmas charity and we decided to do all of that tonight instead of waiting for Christmas. The little buggers had a blast opening stuff. They especially got way too much clothing and I set several outfits aside to be returned to the store. While I loved them and thought they were adorable, I saw no reason to keep un needed items, especially if they were too big. Kitty wound up with 3T stuff! I would have kept it for Deedee but she had received duplicate items. Sigh... Ah, well. Everyone loved the gift bags that I had made and I look forward to using them again next year.

I thought it very appropriate also that it decided to snow. While I was concerned that my mother would have to drive home in it, it was wonderful that within just a few short hours we went from bare soggy ground with isolated little piles of snow to over a foot deep!

Today has been very cold and icy. The few trips we made in the car had us slipping at least once every trip. My boots found no traction and I almost landed on my face to the amusement of some nearby children. :( And we can no longer park on the downward slope in the parking lot. Carey had a hell of a time backing up, the back tires didn't want to catch and he almost slid forward over the embankment. Not good.

We have been very busy the last couple of days and the living room and kitchen are very presentable. It's a nice feeling to have it this clean and I've never understood why I haven't been able to keep it this way. Other than the excess amount of crap that I have shoved in closets and under the beds. Sigh.... I am very proud of myself though. I got through over half of my cards (yes, even the laundry and the clean dishes have been put away) and am well on my way the goal of having it nice by Christmas.

Carey's mother stopped by for a little while today to have a talk with Carey to straighten some stuff out in regards to his father so Carey's in a much better mood now. I was late getting out for my time, especially since it was cut short today. I spent most of that time enjoying myself at Jo Ann's getting the fabric for our new Christmas gift bags. I'm tired of the huge paper mess generated every year so this is my small start. I bout 2 yards of six different fabrics, and 1 yard each of a couple of fabrics that were just gorgeous and I couldn't say no to. I can't wait to get the bags done. I understand that I'll still have a paper mess this year, but it will slowly be taken care of. Of course, I find out after I buy the fabric that Jo Ann's is having a huge 50% off of all sale prices next weekend so I could have saved a huge bundle. Perhaps Carey will let me get some more. I also found a beautiful Santa that came home with. He's wearing a red robe with brown fur accents and holding a staff with holly wound up. He was on sale and came out of my birthday money.

I didn't have my watch or take the phone so I was running late getting home. A quick glance at a clock had just shown my how late I was and I still had to find tights for Deedee. Not one store in that mall had heavy tights! It was all the thin microfiber crap. That is, if they even had tights. :( I wound up just grabbing a packet of sock for her. She had wanted to wear her cute Santa's helper dress but with no heavy tights, she wouldn't be warm enough. So I thought with the socks, she could change into her candy cane pants outfit and still look adorable for the Christmas party we were going to. $8 bucks! For three pairs of socks. That's what I get for not looking at the price but it just never entered my head that it would be that much. Sigh... It's outrageous to pay more than $1 per pair of socks, unless their hand knit and/or wool which these were most assuredly not.

Since I was running so late, I erroneously assumed that Carey would have the kids ready to go when I got home. Unfortunately, I had two naked half children, one wearing a dress she'd spilled cocoa down, and one wearing the clothes he'd gotten his breakfast all down. Sigh... So instead of being maybe 30 minutes late we were over an hour late to a two hour function. >:( It was almost not worth going. In the end, the kids did have fun though. They spent most of their time raiding the snacks and playing in the nursery. There was a paper craft there for them, but they weren't really that interested in it. They enjoyed listening to the piano being played, and the carols being sung but they couldn't really join in for that. The bread slices and spinach dip I brought was well received and none of it made it's way back home. Unfortunately, the kids had just missed Santa. I was glad I didn't tell the kids he was going to be there so they weren't disappointed in missing him.

After we brought the kidlets home, Carey and James took off for a couple of hours to themselves. And my wonderful husband managed to lock himself out of the van. LOL He had to call his mom to come and get my keys for which I had to hunt. They'd gotten misplaced this morning and I hadn't yet found them. Once they had that straightened out, Carey took James to the arcade. James had a blast and he came home really happy telling me about his adventures and showing me the prize that he got from one of the machines. It wound up being one of those junky jewelry sets. Carey very thoughtful had James "give" me the jewelry but he wanted to keep the plastic ball it came in. Unfortunately, it's of the type and make that just shout China and with all the cheap jewelry recalls because of lead, I'm concerned about this set. So I'll wear it once just to let James see it, and then I'll quietly dispose of it.

I ran away again this evening. I wandered back to Jo Ann's and picked up a knifty knitter set. I used a 50% off coupon and some of my bday money. I've been wanting one for some time and I'm pleased that I was finally able to get one. I wandered into the mall when I was done and saw a bunch of awesome stuff. Large crystals that had been turned into lamps. A night light shaped like a knight; his shield and sword glowed. That new little carpet cleaning robot. While it looks really awesome, I'm not sure I'd really want one. It would be cools having a little thing vacuuming up behind the kids but I'd rather use the same insane amount of money and buy a steam cleaner. There was also a little shoppe there, just for the holidays, of local artisans and stuff. Some of the stuff was imported from Africa and India. But there were hand carved wands and clay rune sets that had wonderful energy made locally. I was really interested in the rune set because it came from local clay. I walked out of there with a Christmas present and my eye on a few other items.

One of the movies we received from Netflix this week was My Neighbor Totoro. While I am a huge fan of Hayao Miyazaki's work, I had somehow missed hearing of this little gem. The kids wanted to watch it incessantly and the music is actually running through my head right now. It's about two young girls who's father moves them to the country. Their mother is sick ans stays behind in the hospital. There, they become good friends with spirits of the forest that only they can see. I loved the story and animation. The magic, and the reverence of life just shines through this film. This is one movie that I'll hate to return to Netflix and I can see it joining our collection in the foreseeable future. I have also bought my first mp3 download from Amazon: The Wind Forest from the movie. I really like the music; it's relaxing. I was hoping to find a sound track but no such luck. :(

LOL. My darling Kitty is so cute. Our desktop is a beautiful wolf in an autumn forest. It "howls" at us when we mini/maximize something or when we try to do something that it doesn't want to do (such as close a window when it's busy). I did something, it howled and Kitty let off with a burst of her own little howls. :D

It's hard to believe that it's been four years since I stayed up all night curled up with a blanket in my rocker reading a good book while drinking hot cocoa and eating a whole bag of my favorite iced animal cookies. This has been an amazing adventure with our little man and we're so blessed that he chose to come to us. He has changed so much in the last few years.

  1. He's grown a lot, although, he's still our skinny little monkey.
  2. He's 35 pounds and 34" tall
  3. He still has no butt and his pott belly is smaller.
  4. The beautiful copper hair he was born with is now a strawberry blonde.
  5. He's still my little hypochondriac.
  6. His favorite colors are orange, green and purple
  7. He's very enamored of a small green creature named Grasshopper
  8. He loves magic, and likes to dress up a lot. For Halloween he was a witch (wizard) and he chose a wizard bday party.
  9. He loves listening to books
  10. He learned how to pedal his bike this year.
  11. He can count to 10
  12. He loves to color and draw
  13. He's learning how to write his name
  14. He's very independant and loves doing things for himself
  15. He has moved three times
  16. He loves music of all kinds, but especially enjoys opera
  17. He also loves making music and will daily choose an instrument from the basket. He often choose a harmonica or reede whistle.
  18. He's very inventive. Just the other day he used the end from the teapot spout for an inpromptu whistle to add harmony to whatever song that was playing. He did a great job (and I never realized that little thing could work as a whistle)

Happy birthday dear Charles,

We sing now to you.

Happy birthday dear Charles,

May your wishes come true.

He was born at 3 in the afternoon on Wednesday, Novermber 26 2003. He was 6 lbs. 11 3/4 oz and was 21 1/4 inches long. He is the most precious gift that I ever recieved on any of my birthdays. His red hair was a surprise to all of us. It was a pretty copper when he first arrived although it has now faded to strawberry blonde. In fact, that's why we call him monkey. He was only a week old when I was holding him in my arms and as he srewed up his face to start yelling, with his copper hair sticking out everywhere, he looked just like a little orangutan baby.

He is my human garbage disposal. He routinely eats anything put in front of him, and it's nothing to see him put away as much as I or his father. I never will understand where he puts it, he's so darn skinny. In fact, my mom says he looks just like an old man: skinny body, thin wispy hair, no butt, and a little pot belly. I swear, he does act like one sometimes. He's such a little hypochondriac.

He is our artistic free spirit that dances to the beat of a different drum. He loves bright bold colors and patterns on soft silky fabrics. And he lives up to the name of moneky very well. He's curious about everything and rarely sits still. He's got a surprising strength hiding in those skinny little arms of his and can pack quite a punch as his brother has discovered.
Some misc. cute pics taken recently.

Sunday was wonderful. I actually missed most of the service since I chose to spend some time outside with Charles instead. I pushed him on the swing for some time. We stayed late because the yougth group was holding a pancake brunch to raise money for a trip. It only cost $12 per family so how could we resist a great big lunch for only $2 per person? There was fresh fruit salad, homemade pancakes, wonderful smoked sausage, bacon, oj and an assortment of fresh muffins and scones. It was lovely and we stuffed ourselves. So, needless to say, we abstained our tradition of eating pancakes for dinner on Sunday evening. :D On the way home we had to stop to get milk, and then we took an extended bike ride. The day was beautiful. Since the girls were asleep when we arrived home, we all stayed outside and read to Sunday paper while the boys ran around and had fun. I also went to the library with Charles and we had a nice time. We got a lot of great books and he even behaved himself. He also put his great brain to use. Normally, when we go to the library he makes a beeline to the fountain and then whines quite loudly because there's no stool. This time, he chose to get some water when I was checking out books, but he didn't come back asking for help or start whining. When I went to find him, I discovered that he'd hauled a nearby chair over to the fountain and was standing on it.

On Monday I chose to not go to my group because of the children's behavior lately. I had to straighten up anyway since James' service coordinator was dropping by today. Carey had his first simulation with the WASU vetrinary school and from all accounts did very well. These simulations are run for the students benefits to help them learn how to deal with their patients owners. Carey is an actor and depending on his role, he can be very nice or rather mean. Today his character actually made a student cry. I'm so thankful that Carey landed in this second job. It's only part time; he does several simulations a semester. But $16 an hour is nothing to sneeze at. While he does have to take time off from his other job to do this, this one pays better so he isn't losing any money. He's cleared it with his bosses, which is good. While the University doesn't pay the greatest, I would hate for him to lose this job since the hours are flexible and this is the one job that understands his student status and is willing to work around it.

The only bad thing was later in the evening, the boys got into a lot of trouble. They lost all toys except one stuffed animal and all movie priveleges for a week. This isn't easy since Deedee didn't lose these priveleges but how do I let her watch a movie and keep the boys away? James also got his first taste of soap. He has resorted to biting again lately and is leaving some nasty marks on Charles. Carey had him stand with a cake of soap in his mouth for five minutes. While I thought this extreme, I must admit that he hasn't bitten Charles at all today.

Last night I got to bed late because Kitty was fussy. So I got Charley, our ADF, transferred back into the larger tank since it's getting cold enough that he needs a heater now and our heater is too strong for the little tank he's been in since the move. He's a strong little bugger and we've now had him over a year. All of the other fish, including all replacement fish, that we bought have all passed on now. I was planning on buying some more replacement fish this week, but James hasn't even noticed that the other fish are missing. He's perfectly happy with Charley. Since it was late that I got to bed, I wasn't happy that Carey woke me up at 3:30. This really wasn't his fault and now that I think about it, it is funny. The kids had gotten a hold of his clock, and reset the alarm to go off on EST so instead of going off at 6:30 PST, it went off at 6:30 EST. LOL It's still dark here now at 6, so he thought nothing of it when he got up and it was still dark. He had even completed his shower and was dressed when I asked him what the hell he was doing up so early. I asked him if he was sneaking out to see his girlfriend. :D He informed me that my alarm clock was wrong (it read the correct time) until he got to looking at his and realized the error. Bleh, what a night.

Today went pretty well. There were some upsets when the boys attempted to put in a movie only to be reminded that they didn't get to watch tv at all for the next week. This made them especially unhappy when they weren't even allowed to watch Veggie Tales Sing Along Songs or The Wizard of Oz, their current faves. I did corral them in the dining room for a while when Deedee watched a little movie, but this was such a pain that I nixed the tv for the rest of the day. I got Charles signed up for a preschool class once a week only to realize that the time conflicts with James' first speech therapist class of the morning so I'll have to see how this works out. I had a lot of fun with the kids this afternoon. We actually sat down and I tried to teach them Go Fish with a deck of cards made specifically for the game. LOL What a mess. Kitty wanted everyone's cards and wasn't content with the card she was given. Deedee got very upset when she had to give up any cards and would throw a fit every time. We finally dealt her out of the game when she threw her set of Angel Fish cards at Charles when he asked her if she had a Shark. Sigh...... I also attempted to take the kidlets outside but it didn't happen. Everyone was ready with the exception of Kitty and all she needed was some britches and a coat but the kids got ahead of themselves and went outside without me. When I asked them to come back in for a few minutes, they told me no that they were going on a walk. So the boys were hauled back in and poor Deedee didn't get to go out at all. I had promised them all hot chocolate as a treat when we came back in but since the boys were in trouble, only Deedee got some in her favorite dinosaur cup.

The visit from James service coordinator went well and she filled two pages of notes. James has been acting out a lot lately, so she's going to see if she can find some local programs that might get him out of the house more and involved with activities that would interest him. Cub Scouts might be good, if I can find a good local troupe. We also pulled out James' lesson books to show her and she was impressed with his work.

Dinner was interesting. Carey picked up a pizza on his way home which in itself wasn't very interesting. But everyone decided to have a roaring contest and because I lost, they actually had the nerve to attack me and tickle me! Bleh After dinner, since there was no tv allowed, we occupied the time by reading books to the kidlets and they got sent upstairs 15 minutes earlier than usual, each with the book of their choice to read until lights out. Carey and I then finished watching The English Patient, a sad movie I thought although, it was pretty good.

On Monday, I ran away for a little while. I spent a few minutes at Success by 6 and I asked for tips to help with the kids behavior issues, specifically Charles'. I also managed to score a new booster seat for James! I didn't feel his old one was safe anymore since it was involved in an accident and it was outdated anyway. Yay. I then ran to Jo Ann's real quick to use my coupon and pick up some flannel to make Deedee a nice warm slip. She much prefers wearing dresses, so I may as well keep her as warm as possible. I was quite pleased when I got home and discovered two more 50% off coupons for later this month that I hope to use. I have gotten my hands on a couple of really nice patterns to make slips and bloomers for Deedee: McCall's 4413 and 4505. I showed the pale yellow flannel to Deedee along with the delicate cream colored lace and the tiny yellow butterfly applique I got for it. She was really excited and now I can't wait for the pattern to come in so I can make it for her. If it comes out well, I've got my fingers crossed that we'll have enough money so I can use those coupons on several yards of more flannel to maker her other slips and bloomers, as well as Miss Kitty. While the snow will prohibit us from using the bikes this winter, I still plan on walking a lot everywhere so the kids will need to stay warm.

On that note, James is very excited because his new winter coat came in today! It's really nice, and it even lights up. I about choked spending $75 on it but it was worth it. We bought a size 7/8 so it's big on him but the thought that it will last him at least two seasons makes the price a little more palatable. Looking at it that way, it reduces the price to $37.50 at the most, depending on how many seasons he's able to wear it and that's approximately what we could expect to pay locally for a coat. He insisted on putting it on as soon as the mail lady dropped it off. He carefully hung it up when he was done, and he insisted on showing his father as soon as he came home. We had a lot of fun figuring out how the lights and the rechargeable batteries work and he was just "wow" when he found out his coat lit up. LOL It's a very nice red with black accents, which seems to be his favorite colors. We also plan on getting boots from the same company. Any guesses as to what color combination he picked? Deedee also got a package in today. It was full of underclothes: undies, shirts and socks. Of course, it's all a bit big on her since I managed to get the wrong size but it still fits her so that's ok. She was ecstatic with her underwear and she managed to go through all of them in only a couple of hours. Any little excuse she had, she just had to change. She was also so darn proud of it all that when a neighbor stopped by for a few minutes, Deedee ran to get the box to show it all off. And she had to point out the little flowers and stuff all over her underwear. It was so cute.

Kitty is walking more and more every day. She's also doing great with the toilet and we're able to make it on time at least 90% now. She's getting into the routine of knowing that she goes to the toilet after her naps. She even went so far as to start crying when she didn't make it after her nap yesterday although any other time she doesn't make it, she doesn't really care. She just stares at you, like "so?". It's cute, if annoying.

Carey has dropped one of his classes and he paid the small fee for it yesterday. He's disappointed since he thought it would be a really interesting class when he signed up for it. Also, he didn't do very well on his midterm, and since this class has no papers or anything, that's his whole grade right now. He would have to do extremely well on his finals just to bring it up to a passing grade so he made the choice to drop it. :( The only upside to this is that he now has an extra 9 hours a week to devote to studies for his other classes and work.

The kids have been sick this week and I had to cancel all appointments. They've refused to take all medicine. However, they have consented to medicinal teas and Deedee is quite fond of the tea as long as it has plenty of honey in it. She drinks is several times a day (1/2 c at a time). It has slippery elm, licorice root, chamomile, and marshmallow root along with other good stuff that's been helping with the phlegm and the coughing spasms. She's the sickest of all of them but it isn't so bad that it has me worried about taking her to a doctor.

I've gotten behind on Deedee's coat. I've only gotten two rows done in the last two weeks, and those were both pulled out by the kids and I had to fix it earlier this evening. :( I did get it caught back up this evening just in time to take a quick break to watch some of the fire works for Homecoming. We weren't able to see all of it because of the trees but what did make it up high enough was enjoyable. We were far enough away that the cacophonous noise didn't bother us and it was felt deep inside rather than really heard. I know they aren't perfect crystal clear shots, but they still look really cool.

I have decided that we won't be buying a lot of Christmas presents for the kidlets this year and I plan on making a lot of it. I found the following video by accident, went to the website listed and am now the owner of a unicorn pattern. My mother is making the children fleece blankets with crocheted edging in matching colors and I thought it might be fun to make a unicorn for each child in matching colors.

The Creation of Unicorns

I have discovered that Carey can recite the first two stanza's of Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven. He just started spouting off at dinner the other night. It was interesting listening to it and I'm sure my chin was on the floor.

Today went well. Deedee insisted on going through three pairs of tights before finally settled on a wild pair of pink & brown camo. As I was attempting to put put her shoes on, I realized that they were getting too small on her. They're vintage and while the length itself is still perfectly good they're getting too narrow. I wound digging out a pair that Charles barely wore, they still look brand new, but they're a bit big on her, at least two sizes too big. I'll have to see about getting her something else but it's what we had. James looked very nice today. He chose a western style gray shirt with black piping, and black pearl snaps with his new ruby red socks and his cowboy boots. He also insisted on wearing the new winter vest that Grandma Sue bought him, as did Charles. Both of the boys are quite enamored of those vests.

James was 10 minutes late to his first therapist this morning which in the end turned out alright since she wasn't sure to expect us today or not. I had to cancel last week because Mister James wasn't back in town yet. This was the first time he'd ever met her and he did very well. It didn't take her long at all to pull him out of his shell and have him sitting at the table talking to her. He did surprise both of us though. I knew he was mechanically inclined, but I didn't realize just how smart he was in that area. There was a small wind up toy, the type that usually comes in a happy meal, that she wound too tight and it wouldn't work anymore. James picked it up, rooted around on the desk until he found a paper clip, slipped it down in against the little gear shaft and fixed it! The therapist wound it too tight again on purpose to try it herself and she was able to get it as well. The point though is that neither of us would have thought of that and the toy most likely would have been thrown away. I'm very proud of my little one. Now, to encourage that gift will be the real challenge.

We had some time between his appointments, so we stopped in for some milk since it was on the way and it's always easier to go shopping with less than four children. He also picked out some yogurt smoothies to share with his siblings; he'd behaved so well that I thought he deserved a nice treat. On our way out, he also got a ride in the little kiddy car. He said it was boring, LOL. I had meant to stop in to say hi to friend who's been ill this week, but there was less time than I thought so instead we went straight to his second appointment. We were right on time and he'd just dumped a small Pooh puzzle to work on when Kathy came out for him. We put it back together before going to her office. It had been so long since she'd seen him that she didn't plan much. She just wanted to see where he was at. The read Hop on Pop and he had great fun with that. They also enacted The Three Little Pigs with a little set and he really got into that one. I also forget the wonderful imagination he has. I finally learned what had happened to her and why she was out for so long. Apparently, she was looking after a friends house and she got locked out on the patio. It had no stairs, and she finally decided that she would go over the side and try to drop down several feet to the ground. Unfortunately, she wound up fracturing a vertebrae. She's looking well though and she no longer has to wear a brace so I hope all goes well for her.

We got back to Carey's parents just in time to meet Papa Stu coming back from the park with the kidlets and Kitty was asleep in the stroller. We got them loaded and home with enough time eat, form the gingerbread baby to pop in the oven and then drop Charles and Deedee off with a neighbor so I could head out with James and Kitty for James' physical. The construction wasn't too bad on the way there, we were only stopped once for a few minutes and still arrived on time. He cooperated beautifully with the doc and his only upset was the chicken pox shot. He wasn't too happy with that one, but was placated at home with a small bowl of frozen yogurt. He weighs 42 pounds and is 46 inches tall. The doc had some small concern with James' fine motor skills, but that could be because James was getting tired and didn't want to play the "games" anymore. Then again, considering that that has also been mentioned on his IEP, perhaps there is a concern there. I was a bit annoyed that it took over 10 minutes just to get out of the parking lot, though. Bleh, if only that was the longest I had to wait, I would have been ecstatic in the end. It took me an hour to drive 8 miles! The construction had traffic backed up so far that I couldn't see the end either in front of me or behind me. Upon entering Moscow again, the oncoming traffic was backed up through almost two lights. Once, I was stopped in one spot for almost 20 minutes, with one of the Moscow's water towers just visible over the hill. It was quite sad that the bikers and runners on the bike trail to the right of the highway were moving faster than the traffic.

After dinner, we read The Gingerbread Boy from The Primer by Harriet Taylor Treadwell. I printed it out on cardstock and Carey read it to the kidlets. James especially got into it since he's the one that requested this whole thing. He refused to do the lessons I had set him. He wanted to read The Gingerbread Boy! So, instead of counting leaves and rocks and stuff, he did math in the kitchen by making his own giant gingerbread boy. We ate it after dinner with cool whip. The kids all thought it great fun.

Lots of pictures! All of these were taken in the last week. Yes! That means we figured out what was wrong with the darn camera! It would take forever for them to load, so I made my favorites of the kids into a slideshow. And my Mister James is home, safe and sound! Tonight is also the Harvest Moon. That is traditionally the first full moon closest to the Fall Equinox, which was just this last Sunday, also known as Mabon. I found a beautiful video about it this morning at Youtube, quite by accident and I've also included it here. Yes, yes, I know, this is a heavy post. Sorry about that, but I've been lazy. :D This week has been long and crazy.

Sunday, my Pagan Soul group did a wonderful service at Church in honor of the equinox. However, we did not perform a ritual; it was more a teaching service. I designed an altar, Big Momma Designed the World was read, and four group members talked of why they were Pagan. Only Charles came with me to Church that day. LOL The little monkey helped me set up the altar, and managed to pilfer not only two apples but a pear AND ate all of it. He stayed upstairs long enough to light the Chalice, listen to Big Momma and embarass me by sitting his apple core in the altar's basket of vegge (we were sitting right in front of it, and it's our basket so he thought nothing of it). We barely made it home in time to go to his friend Michael's bday party as well as welcome my little traveler home.

On Monday, I spent over an hour lazing around outside with the kids and got some awesome pics. It was a beautiful day and although there was a bit of a bite in the air, it was still warm enough that I felt quite comfortable outside barefoot. I read bits of The Children's Year and Earthways to get ideas of projects to do with the kidlets now that the wheel has turned to the new season. We got to my mommy group late, and stayed even later so it wasn't until after 7 that we got out of there. We stopped at the co op on the way home; we needed milk and something for dinner. We didn't have much money but in the end we came in under budget and took home hearty roasted red pepper & tomato soup to be eaten with some tasty wheat saltines also bought, slices of cheddar and some lovely coconut pudding that the kids had fun helping me make. We didn't get home until 7.30 and it was almost completely dark already. Dinner was put on the table just in time for Carey to get home from his class.

Tuesday, poor little Deedee woke me up at 7 after peeing her bed. So she and I took a quick bath together before we curled back up in my bed and we all slept until 9. Carey's mom dropped off some nice outerwear vests for the boys and they're quite pleased with them. Deedee was happy too because her new winter tights came in. I hit the clearance sale at The Children's Place, got lots of socks and tights and then managed to get it all even cheaper by making use of a $10 off coupon that I had. Only $2.30 a pair of tights is very nice, even better than the dreaded Walmart!

Today, well today was very blah. I couldn't get interested in anything today and it was made even worse when I realized that I wouldn't be able to attend my Full Moon Circle. Not only did I not have a ride (she was sick), but Carey wouldn't be getting home in time from class for me to go. I think that had a lot to do with my attitude today. I look forward to it every month, and I especially looked forward to it this month because of the Harvest Moon. James also didn't want to do his lessons today. He happened to see me saving a copy of an old primer from an online site that happened to have The Gingerbread Boy in it, and got quite fixated on it. So I had him sit down and look at it Then, we looked up a recipe together and made gingerbread that's quite tasty. It's chilling in the fridge right now, to be made for breakfast in the morning. So I guess I wasn't as blah as I though but I still didn't feel that great. Instead, after dinner of baked pancake, baked apples and sausage I curled up with some hot cocoa with a Poirot movie, and Deedee's coat.

My Little Traveler

I've heard from my mom. James is having an awesome time on his adventures. In fact, he informed her that he doesn't wish to leave! LOL So here are some pics of him from Battleford, North Saskatchewan.

These are only my favorite shots; you can view more here. These also include pictures of my mother (Wachapi), my grandmother (Dove Lady), my brother Jason, their hosts Medicine Wolf (Lyle) and Sky Woman (Laurie) and their granddaughter Dylisha. This site, Spirit Trackers, is run by Medicine Wolf, as well as Old Wise One.
Here are some pics from Kitty and James' bday party a couple of weeks ago. Yes, I know, it was late but we just didn't have time to do them properly before the move. These were all taken by Gramma Sue. Any pics I took, mostly of the treasure hunt, will on stay on camera until it decides to cooperate again.

Today, I was absolutely crushed (and humiliated) when I was asked not to return to my knitting group because my children are too much of a distraction. Granted, my children can be hand full, especially when they don't get at least one nap. Which, of course, invariably, on this day they never do. So, on the one hand I do understand. On the other hand I'm just really hurt and upset because my kids aren't near the little monsters they used to be.

The parenting class/program Carey and I are in uses lots of attending and stuff like that. We're not allowed to hit or spank the kids at all (which is good, this is what I wanted although my husband is a bit leery of this) and it's working! It's amazing, but it is. I have seen a huge difference in my oldest son already. I have found the caring, thoughtful, helpful little boy hiding behind the ugly monster that has been living with me for the last several years.

Unfortunately, they're still too much of a disturbance to everyone else. So, no more knitting group, one of my few escapes a week where I'm actually talking to real adults and not small children that have no idea what I'm talking about or even understand. So, while I'm busy feeling sorry for myself, here are some random pics taken over the last week or so.
